Washing your ski clothing, good idea or not?
The clothing that you wear during skiing is subject to a lot, friction, wear and tear, the elements of the outside, sweat, snow and ice. Plus, it is also worn when going for a drink after skiing. As a result, it might be good to look at the question; how should you wash your ski clothing?
What makes a ski outfit different as opposed to regular clothing?
Your ski outfit has different properties then your regular clothing. It has to keep you warmer, shouldn’t cause too much respiration and it has to be wind & snow resistant while still allowing you to breathe properly.
This is when going to a skiing or snowboarding you wear multiple layers of clothing the first two clothes are more than often thermal and isolation clothing. For example, thermal underwear and a fleece sweater. These layers are often fine to wash at home.
Washing thermal clothing
Thermal clothing keeps you warm and also takes care of too much warmth and respiration. Synthetic fabrics such as polyester but also merino wool are appropriate for this. You may wash these fabrics at home by yourself but check the washing label to be sure. You can find the right instructions to wash your ski outfit there, beware with putting it in the dryer! It may lose its isolating properties!
Washing Fleece
For washing fleece, the same rules apply as for thermal clothing. The washing label will show how to wash it in the washing machine. Make sure that fleece clothing is also washed from the inside out, moreover, don’t put it in the dryer! It also won’t be necessary as fleece is a material that dries quickly by its very nature.
Washing your ski coat
Most people will do just fine with fleece and thermal clothing, but what about the ski coat or jacket? They are often coated with a layer or contain down, can you even put that in the washing machine?
The answer is yes, but it is more advisable to bring it to the dry cleaners. A few tips for your coat:
- The wash label is your best friend, see whether you can wash it yourself or whether it has to go to the dry cleaner
- 2. Empty all pockets properly, might seem silly but you wouldn’t be the first (or the last) to have their ski glasses, sunburn or items still in their pockets!
- 3. Only use a detergent, no softener or other remedies. You highly risk damaging the protective coating on the coat.
- 4. Never put the coat in the dryer, the dryer will lessen the isolating effect of the coat and damage the zipper and buckle..
- 5. Does your jacket have a water-resistant coating? You risk losing this if you wash it yourself. The dry cleaner has a special treatment after cleaning it which reapplies the water-resistant coating. Unfortunately, this is not doable at home.
LET OP! • Note: If you have a down ski-coat then do NOT wash it in your own washing machine. There is a significant risk of the down coat being damaged which causes it to isolate less and thus feel less warm. The dry cleaner has special machinery that allows it to clean the down coat undamaged.
